This is a view that rowers know well, but it could become a thing of the past! National Trust for Canada recently added the Alexandra bridge to its 2021 Endangered Places List and now a coalition of advocates from the heritage, transportation and environmental sectors has come together to protect the future of the historic Alexandra Bridge.
The federal government is proposing to demolish the bridge on the basis that it can no longer sustain vehicular traffic. The Alexandra Bridge Coalition would like that decision to be revisited, in light of the Government of Canada's own commitment to renew heritage sites and cultural landscapes, and its policies on climate change and green infrastructure.
The Coalition proposes that the Bridge be retained for its national built-heritage value and significance, and repurposed for green infrastructure transportation.
