Hey folks,

Here is something I should have posted in the spring. How to get back into a capsized shell.

It looks like we need to work on our upper body strength. Practice lifting yourself onto the side of a pooI this winter.

Another tip is swimming under the boat to position the opposite oar where you like. This saves your energy to pull yourself into the shell.

I will repost next spring too. Stay safe! Row with a buddy.

I’d love to practice this as well; I’d be happy to “demonstrate” it if a coach can talk me through what to do as I (attempt a) self-rescue. If a bunch of us are interested, maybe we could organize a “flip clinic” early next season to limit “abuse” to the demo boat. While I’m obviously not experienced enough to teach a clinic, I’d be happy to take the lead on gauging interest, coordinating a date via MeetUp, etc.

This may have been the “green flare” you saw:

Who wants to row evenings this week?

We may need to use sturdier boats, as the wind is 10-15 km/h from the westish. Starting by 6pm at the latest. How many can come Thursday evening?

Jenny M

This may become a paddling excursion. The winds are quite strong. 17km/h nw

Your ONEC mixed masters crew. They fought rain, and lighting to come to a battle of the blades with Hanlan as they rounded the library corner. What as exciting race!
