About the Event
Join ONEC’s welcoming paddle for the Chief Pinesi Flotilla which is going from Oka to Ottawa. This recreates the return trip of many Algonquins from their summer encampment in Oka to their hunting grounds. Chief Pinesi’s hunting ground covered the present City of Ottawa. The Chief wrote many petitions to the British Governor demanding enough territory to support himself and his family. On July 1 the Chief Pinesi flotilla ends at Governors’ Bay and it's participants will proceed to ceremonies in Stanley Park. ONEC’s welcome paddle will continue towards Rideau Falls and perhaps the Hull Marina before returning to ONEC. If you wish, you can further embrace reconciliation at the Chief Pinesi Day celebrations at the New Edinburgh Fieldhouse in Stanley Park.
Eligibility for this free event: ONEC members, their guests and accompanied children 12 years and older; some canoeing experience required. Exact route taken will depend on weather conditions.
