Ottawa River Police

To all ONEC Members:

Please ensure you are carrying the necessary safety equipment when you leave the dock. The Ottawa River Police are now checking for compliance with Canadian Coast Guard regulations: lifejacket, whistle, bailer, throw rope with buoyancy at end. Do not assume that rowing early will miss the patrols.

Safety Advisories

SCULLERS PLEASE NOTE:
Navigation Hazard at the Marina
in the Kettle Island Channel

A log boom has been installed approximately 100m upstream of the marina, on the north shore in the Kettle Island Channel.

It is attached at the shore and extends 50m into the channel. It is wider than the marina docks.

When approaching the marina on the north shore of the channel ensure that when you are within 250m of the marina that you are moving away from the shore and are able to easily clear the marina docks. The boom is partly submerged. It has warning orange cones on it but is still difficult to see. The stream is faster through the channel currently and it is easy to leave course correction too late and come into contact with the boom.

Look around and check your position when closing on the marina.

COLD WATER INCAPACITATING
IN RECENT RESCUE EFFORT

A "chilling" story appeared in The Citizen newspaper on Tuesday, June 3rd about a recent boating rescue in the South Nation River, a river much smaller than the Ottawa.

Even the very strong 37yo OPP Officer was no match for the temperature of the water....good thing he had a back up plan.

Row safely, everyone, and have a back-up plan.

Escorted Rowing

Escorted rowing will take place in the spring and fall, when water conditions are in the RED-to-YELLOW periods.

ONEC Rowing Calendars

The numerous calendars of events for ONEC Rowing are all captured on Google Calendar.

Boat Usage

With the ONEC rowing season fast approaching, club boats will soon be in high demand between members, clinics, and instruction classes.

In order to ensure fairness when it comes to club boat usage, keep the following in mind:

  • ALWAYS reserve the boat you intend to use; DO NOT take a boat if you have not reserved it.
  • If your boat is missing when you arrive for your reserved time, DO NOT take another boat.
  • Know which boat you have reserved. Each boat is described in the reservation system and most club boats have their name on the bow. (For example, “Black Rapids” is the red Hudson T-6 touring single.)
  • If you decide not to row, CANCEL your reservation to release the boat for someone else to use.
  • If your reserved boat is not there for you, please report it to onecboatadmin@hotmail.com

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.  We need to work together to make the reservation system work to the benefit of all ONEC Rowing members.

Boat Reservation System

The ONEC boat reservation system (for club sculls) has been activated for the season.

If you are a paid member of ONEC Rowing yet your account has not been activated, or if you are a returning member and have 'misplaced' your password, please contact the ONEC Boat Reservation System Administrator at onecboatadmin@hotmail.com and we will do our best to get everything set up for you quickly and easily.

For a little light reading, feel free to check out the (BRIEF!) reservation system manual.

Rowing Traffic Patterns

It is very important to follow the proper rowing traffic patterns on the Ottawa River.

Please row upstream on the Ontario side, and downstream on the Québec side. This is very important to avoid collisions, especially with fast-moving competitive rowers.

A helpful hint is the "right oar to the shore" rule. This means that no matter which direction you are travelling, your right oar (as you sit in the boat... aka. port oar) is closest to the nearest shore.

Traffic patterns are also shown on a map immediately inside the boathouse door, on the east-side (right) wall.

About the ONEC Rowing Program

The Ottawa New Edinburgh Club Rowing Program is focused on sports and social activities. We strive to be a social hot spot for Ottawa-Gatineau rowers who want to develop their rowing skills and enjoy our boathouse’s upper deck for the bbq, dancing, parties, and at the bar overlooking the river.

Enjoy Ottawa's best rowing courses on the Ottawa River and the Gatineau River. Truly, our rowing program has everything for the adult rower from access to good equipment, instruction, and a variety of social and athletic programs. The club also offers tennis and sailing as additional sporting options.

The season stretches from May to October, morning, noon or night on one of the most picturesque stretches of the Ottawa River at Rockcliffe. Lessons and clinics are designed to develop skills, for this graceful sport with real fitness benefits. It is a myth that you have to have great strength and endurance to start rowing. Just from going out at a gentle pace, you can quickly develop greater health and fitness to row at your own level. And, it’s wonderful for anyone who loves being on water, away from the traffic congestion of the city, whether or not you aspire to rowing greatness.

We invite both recreational and Masters scullers (two oar rowing) to our Club to participate in our rowing and social activities that include:
